Aspetar Fellowship Programme

Aspetar delivers advanced training through its Graduate Medical Education programmes, designed to develop future leaders in sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, rehabilitation and podiatry. These programmes provide comprehensive, structured training within a multidisciplinary environment that integrates clinical practice, education, and research.

Aspetar is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education International (ACGME-i) accredited sponsoring institution and offers structured, accredited training fellowships in:

  • Sports Medicine (2 year programme)
  • Orthopaedic Sports Medicine

Eligibility for the ACGME-i accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship includes specialist physicians who completed their training in Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Pediatrics, Family Medicine, or Emergency Medicine. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship is open to orthopaedic surgeons.

Each programme offers two positions per year and provides fellows with extensive clinical exposure, mentorship from expert faculty, and opportunities to participate in research and academic activities. Fellows work within a collaborative multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, surgeons, physiotherapists, and sports scientists.

Training focuses on developing clinical expertise, professional competencies, and leadership skills aligned with international standards in graduate medical education.

In addition to the ACGME-i-accredited fellowships, Aspetar offers a range of clinical fellowship programmesfor  physicians with a core specialty qualification seeking to further develop their clinical expertise in a high-performance sports medicine setting in the following specialties:

What do our Fellowship alumni say?

Dr Rafael Geiss Santos (Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician) – Brazil says:

My experience in the Sports Medicine fellowship was amazing. Great learning opportunity including most of the Sports Medicine field, where I got the chance to share, discuss, and improve with an extremely top-level team in a multidisciplinary and international environment. I definite recommend it for upcoming fellows.

Dr Louis Lima (Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician) from Portugal says:

World reference Centre in every field related to Sports Medicine. My expectations regarding the fellowship were high and were exceeded by far!
The opportunity to have one to one discussions with top experts in the several fields of medical sport sciences (Sports Medicine, Orthopaedics, Cardiology, Physiology, Podology, Nutrition, Physiotherapy and others) with both a strong clinical and scientific background was a major factor in the fellowship.
I would like to thank the entire Sports Medicine Department for the way I was welcomed and immediately integrated in the team as well as for the total willingness. Making this fellowship really stand up to its name.
The Sports Medicine Department really put an effort to constructively criticize my clinical and scientific skills and thus allowing me to improve.

Dr Pieter Volcke (Specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) from Belgium says:

Aspetar gave me the unique opportunity to get in 6 months maximally exposed to excellent international sports medicine teaching from known leaders all over the world. I enjoyed the combination of clinical practice with the possibility to get time for study and research to develop my skills and knowledge. Aspetar gave me a huge learning opportunity and definitely a step up in my sports medicine career. And last but most important, friends for life

Dr Frantzeska Zampeli ( Clinical Specialist Fellow 2021-2022) from Greece says:

The year I spent in Orthopaedic Sports fellowship at the Surgery Department of Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital was one of the best and most rewarding years of my training.
In both the clinic and the operating theater, I was able to work with experts in sports surgery. The surgical experience was exceptional as each physician with whom I worked at the surgery department is a leader in his/her fields: arthroscopy, knee surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, foot and ankle surgery, hand and wrist surgery, groin pain surgery. Every surgeon has a unique philosophy and all together act as a team. Clinic was a great learning experience on how to formulate an appropriate treatment plan from the diagnosis to final treatment. At the same time I was able to get involved with research, discuss and exchange ideas for innovative projects, establish research protocols and investigate important clinical questions. The weekly educational conferences and preoperative meetings were valuable. The online educational activities, journal clubs, the cadaveric courses and the international conferences allow the fellows to maximize their education. In the Sports Surgery Training Center, the cadaveric laboratory of Aspetar, we had the opportunity to practice new techniques and equipment.
Everyone at Aspetar from the physicians to the support staff work as a team with the goal of excellent patient care and the safe return to sports of athletes. Going to work every day at Aspetar was truly pleasant because of this great community of people: the whole Aspetar staff, our unique surgeons, and my co-fellows that finally became friends for a lifetime!
I will be forever grateful for my time at the Surgery Department of Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital as it was a truly thorough training and educational experience with wonderful people.

Dr. Theodorakys Marin ( Clinical Specialist Fellow -Orthopaedic Surgery 2021-2022 ) from Venezuela says:
