Dr. Steve McNally is the Performance Support Director at English Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL)where he has led the delivery of Conditioning, Medical, Nutrition, Psychology, and Performance Analysis services to referees across professional football in England since 2023.

Steve began his career in Sports Medicine while practicing as a General Medical Practitioner and Occupational Physician in Liverpool during the 1990s. His journey into football medicine started with his appointment as Club Doctor at Marine AFC in 1993, followed by a role as Academy/Assistant Team Doctor at Liverpool FC in 1998. From 2003 to 2006, he served as Team Doctor for England’s Youth Development, Amputee, and National Game squads.

In 2006, Steve joined Manchester United FC as Club Doctor and later became the Head of Football Medicine and Science. In this role, he led a multidisciplinary team responsible for physical conditioning, health and wellbeing, recovery, regeneration, and rehabilitation. Throughout his tenure, he integrated Occupational Health principles with his Sports and General Medical expertise to navigate the complex balance between athlete care and his responsibilities to club owners, directors, management, and football’s governing bodies.

Steve’s interests in Sports Cardiology and Musculoskeletal Imaging led to the creation of Manchester United’s Imaging Centre in 2013. This facility provided advanced screening, profiling, diagnostic assessments, and research opportunities through collaborations with leading cardiologists and radiologists.
