Practice and the Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice at Qatar University

Prof. Ahmed Awaisu is a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice and the Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Practice at Qatar University’s College of Pharmacy. He holds a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. He has practiced as a licensed pharmacist across healthcare and academic settings since 1999.

Since 2016, Prof. Awaisu has pioneered efforts in sports pharmacy by developing and delivering a specialized course entitled “Drugs in Sport”, in collaboration with Prof. David R. Mottram, Prof. Sherief Khalifa, and Dr. Ousama Rachid. The course addresses why athletes take drugs, the evolution of doping and anti-doping strategies, WADA Prohibited List, therapeutic use exemptions (TUE), and the pharmacist’s role as an athlete support personnel. He has also led numerous workshops and CPD programs for pharmacists and healthcare professionals in this area.

Prof. Ahmed Awaisu has an extensive record of academic and scholarly contributions, with over 250 peer-reviewed publications in reputable international journals, including The Lancet. As of May 2025, his Google Scholar profile reflects an h-index of 45, an i10-index of 136, with 364 publications and over 8,000 citations. On Scopus, he holds an h-index of 30, with 237 publications cited 4,634 times by 4,271 documents. He has supervised several MSc and PhD students from Qatar, Malaysia, the UK, and New Zealand.

His broader research spans pharmacoepidemiology and medication safety, outcome-based research, pharmacy education, and health promotion. He has received prestigious awards such as the Qatar University Research Excellence Award (2019), Qatar University Merit Award for Outstanding Faculty (2017), and the ISPOR Best New Investigator Award (2011).
