  • Professor Pelliccia is the Scientific Director of the Institute of Sports Medicine of the Italian National Olympic Committee.

  • He has also served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Italian National Team at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City 2002, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010, a role he continues to offer at London 2012.

  • Professor Pelliccia was the Guest Investigator at the National Institute of Health, Cardiology Branch, Bethesda, Maryland, 1988 and 1989; Visiting scientist at University Hospital of the Georgetown University, Washington DC, 1992; Visiting scientist at New England Medical Centre of the TUFTS University, Boston, 1997.

  • His academic appointments include: Professor of Sports Cardiology, Post-Graduate School in Sports Medicine, University of Rome and Adjunct Professor, TUFTS University, Boston.

  • He is a founder and former chairman (2006-2008) of the Sports Cardiology Section of the European Society of Cardiology.

  • His area of expertise lies in pre-participation screening for cardiovascular disease at risk of sudden death in athletic populations; clinical management of athletes with cardiovascular diseases; criteria of differential diagnosis of athlete’s heart from structural cardiac disease.

  • Professor Pelliccia has authored a number of papers and is regarded as the first author of more than 100 papers on peer-reviewed journals -including New England Journal of Medicine, Journal American Medical Association, Circulation, Journal American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, European Heart Journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, and International Journal of Sport Medicine.
