World-renowned consultant in hernia surgery visits Aspetar

The incidence of sports hernia in high-performance athletes is between 0.5% and 6.7% and that sports hernia comprises of 5 to 7% of all sports injuries.

Commenting on her speciality during her visit to Aspetar, Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck, said;

A hernia is a painful soft tissue injury that often affects the groin area. It most often occurs in sports that require sudden changes of direction or intense twisting movements. Hernia diagnosis in athletes can be treated using a special mesh free technique which is referred to as tissue repair technique through a surgery. In such cases, athletes can return to full sporting activity after a maximum period of two weeks.

The expert explained that she has been working closely with Aspetar’s world-class medical staff and sharing knowledge on all relevant aspects related to hernias and their treatment, including ultrasounds through to the diagnosis process which can vary enormously on a case-by-case basis.

The world-renowned consultant in hernia is the surgical chief and founder of the 'Hernia Center, Munich' – the largest European Centre that exclusively specialises in hernias of the abdominal wall and groin region. Since 1989, she has worked solely on developing techniques in hernia surgery. She took up residence in her own medical practice as a surgical specialist in 1993 and since then has worked exclusively in the field of hernia surgery. She has developed two surgical methods in the past 10 years which have revolutionised patient care: the 'Minimal Repair' specifically developed for those affecting athletes’ groins, and the 'Munich Repair' treating umbilical hernias.
