Musculoskeletal Medicine

Musculoskeletal medicine is the branch of specialised therapeutics that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones, and the impact of these conditions on your daily life. Musculoskeletal medicine incorporates aspects of general medical and wellness care, treatment by specialist of a particular injury or disease, pain management, and rehabilitation to achieve a return to function and sports.

Commonly treated musculoskeletal disorders are sports and accident related injuries such as joint and bone fractures, inflammatory conditions

such as tendonitis, bursitis or fasciitis, as well as degenerative disorders such as osteoarthritis. Pain, numbness, and loss of function are all common complaints of those suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, simply because of the way in which the body works.

The intertwining of bones with muscles, muscles with tendons and ligaments, and all of these connected with the nervous system, makes musculoskeletal disorders complex and problematic for many patients. Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders, injuries and, dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system are usually treated by experts in the field of MSK.  Within this field common sub-specialties are Rheumatology, Neurology, Physical Medicine, Pain Management, Regenerative Medicine, and Rehabilitation Medicine, in which experts treat disorders of the affected parts of the musculoskeletal system.

The treatment of orthopaedic disorders that do not require surgery are also managed by the MSK consultants using a conservative approach via physical therapy, pain therapy, medications, or injections.  If a conservative treatment isn't possible, surgical methods can be employed and we have several orthopaedic specialists who can be referred to. If the condition requires life style changes besides specific treatment, then patients can be referred to our Healthy Lifestyle Program.
