Issue targeted topic - cartilage: surgical options
July
2016
This Targeted Topic on Cartilage - Surgical Options, focuses on an issue which plagues athletes across a variety of sports – knee cartilage injury. This pathology is often complicated by other concurrent injuries, such as ACL rupture or meniscus disruption. Often surgical repair is the only available option.
The Guest Editor for this issue, Professor Mats Brittberg, is a pioneering knee surgeon, who was the first to perform autologous chondrocyte implantation in a human trial. He has assembled a team of world-renowned surgeons to present papers on a spectrum of both classic and novel techniques that are of interest in the field of knee cartilage repair.
Articles cover techniques such as autologous chondrocyte implantation, osteochondral allograft transplantation, subchondroplasty and mini-metal implants; concomitant surgeries including cartilage and ACL repair, and cartilage and meniscus restoration; return to play; and the “black hole of orthopaedics” – patellofemoral cartilage lesions.
