Volume 4 - Targeted Topic - Aquatic Sports

October 2015
This eighth Targeted Topic focuses on aquatic sports. Guest edited by Aspetar’s Director of Medical Education, Dr Paul Dijkstra, who served as Chief Medical Officer at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Doha. Aquatic disciplines are often associated with young athletes and heavy training loads, this issue covers a range of problems affecting these athletes. Articles include imaging the painful shoulder in swimmers, injuries in water polo and the swimmer’s heart. We speak to Oussama Mellouli, the first swimmer to claim Olympic gold in the pool and in an open water event. Former Olympic champion Penny Heyns gives tips on life after elite swimming and we also hear from Cees-Rein van den Hoogenband (father of triple Olympic gold medalist, Pieter) on the challenges of being doctor of a team which includes your son.
