Issue: Targeted Topic - Exercise Is Medicine®

Issue targeted topic - exercise is medicine®

May 2017

The traditional notion of sports medicine as focused solely on elite athletes is rapidly vanishing. The key role of sports medicine in the health and wellbeing of our societies is becoming increasingly clear as levels of non-communicable ‘lifestyle’ diseases continue to surge. This Targeted Topic has been produced in partnership with the Exercise Is Medicine® Global Health Initiative. The EIM programme, started by the American College of Sports Medicine and American Medical Association in 2007, aims to have healthcare providers assess physical activity as a vital sign at every patient visit and assist those not meeting recommended guidelines to do so via clinical and/or community resources. Our Guest Editors, Doctors Mohamed Ghaith Al-Kuwari, Adrian Hutber and Thomas Best, are tireless advocates of physical activity and exercise as medicine. They have assembled a global team of authors to give an insight into the varied and innovative ways in which EIM is promoting physical activity in populations around the world.
