Volume 5 - Targeted Topic - International Sports Federations

March 2016
We start 2015 with a Targeted Topic on Protecting Athletes’ Health in International Federations. Our Guest Editor for this issue, Dr Katharina Grimm, Director of Medical Affairs at Aspetar, has served executive and sports medicine commissions for FIMS, FIFA, and WADA. She has brought this issue expert authors from International Federations across the sporting landscape. These leaders in their fields all aim to answer the questions at the core of sports medicine: ‘how do we maximise athletes’ performance, while protecting their health?’ and ‘how can we use sport to promote the health and wellbeing of everyone?’ We talk to President of the International Paralympic Committee, Sir Philip Craven, about the role of sports medicine in para-sports and we hear from two leading experts in providing sports medicine in International Federations: Dr Gerard Saillant of the FIA Medical Commission and Institute and Dr Michel D’Hooghe of the FIFA Executive and Medical Committee, who have more than 65 years of experience in this area between them.
