84 ASPETAR MAGAZINE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Ismael Bennacer The Heart of a Champion: Ismaël Bennacer's Journey at Aspetar and Love for Qatar (Interview conducted in 2024) Ismaël Bennacer, the Algerian international midfielder, is widely celebrated as the Best Player of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), a title he earned while leading his country to victory. His professional career began at AC Arles-Avignon before he moved to Arsenal. After a loan spell at Tours FC, he truly rose to prominence with Empoli, which earned him a transfer to Italian giants AC Milan. There, Bennacer cemented his status as a world-class talent, becoming a key player and a Serie A champion. Now, he speaks candidly about his injury, rehabilitation, and what makes Aspetar a unique choice for athletes. Why are you here at Aspetar? I came here because I had a significant injury, and I believe this was the best choice for me to get the proper treatment. How did you find out about Aspetar, and why did you choose it? I've known about Aspetar for a long time. I'd seen conferences and knew of other players who had done their rehabilitation here. I chose it because I was looking for the best possible facility, with top-tier doctors and an excellent environment for my recovery. All of these factors played a huge role in my decision, and I’m very happy to be here. What has your experience at Aspetar been like so far? The Algerian Federation, which is in partnership with Aspetar, handled all the arrangements for me. When I arrived, I was truly impressed by everything. The reception was warm, and the services are incredible. This isn't just a sports centre; it's a sports city with every service you could need. There are doctors, podiatrists, and nutritionists—everything is available. The staff are highly competent, from all over the world, and they've created a welcoming and comforting environment. How does this facility compare to other sports medicine centres you've seen in your career? I don't think I've seen a centre that could be better elsewhere. I haven't been to many others, but the care I receive here is more than enough. I feel really good, and I don’t think I would need to go anywhere else if something were to happen in the future. You've been to Qatar before. What role does the country's environment play in your recovery? This is my fifth time in Qatar, and I love it here; I feel completely at ease. I think being in a good mental state is the most crucial part of a long-term injury recovery. It plays a massive role in the healing process. That’s what you need to look for in a rehabilitation centre—a great environment on top of excellent treatment. My positive impressions of the country have only been confirmed. Do you have amessage for your fans? I’ve been receiving so many messages frommy supporters and fans. It's truly heartwarming and helps me stay strong during my recovery. Usually, when an athlete is injured, the support can fade, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the constant encouragement. Their messages mean a lot to me. I’m working hard and will be back on the pitch soon and stronger than ever, God willing. I hope to thank them for their support with my performance. Scan the QR code to watch more
