Aspetar Magazine 2026

67 ASPETAR MAGAZINE SPECIAL REPORT One of the defining features of this approach was standardisation. With matches taking place across multiple venues and teams arriving with different medical structures, consistency became essential. “In earlier tournaments, services were largely reactive and team- based,” Dr Khalid notes. “Today, the approach is proactive and coordinated. We integrate sports medicine, sports science, emergency planning, and performance support into a single framework.” Achieving this required close collaboration with FIFA, organising committees, national federations, and team medical staff. “Coordination is the foundation of effective event medical care,” he explains. “We work through joint task forces, regular planning meetings, and simulation exercises. Clear communication and mutual trust ensure that medical decisions are aligned with player welfare and team objectives.” Alongside operational leadership, Aspetar placed strong emphasis on workforce development. In the lead-up to the tournament, more than 3,500 doctors, nurses, paramedics, and support staff were trained through structured programmes , workshops , simulations, and field-of-play rehearsals, many coordinated in partnership with Dr Celeste’s team. This investment ensured that medical personnel across all venues operated with shared standards, protocols, and expectations. Another central priority was risk management. Drawing on lessons from previous tournaments, Aspetar focused on anticipating medical scenarios rather than reacting to them. “One of the most important lessons is the value of early planning and standardisation,” Dr Khalid says. “We learned the importance of proactive risk management and flexibility, particularly when supporting teams with different levels of medical resources.” Throughout the tournament, Aspetar maintained 24/7 readiness, rapid-access diagnostic services, and multidisciplinary care pathways, enabling swift response to injuries and illnesses in a high-pressure environment. The results were evident. Qatar 2022’s medical services were later recognised by FIFA as a benchmark for future tournaments, validating years of institutional investment in systems, people, and planning. For Aspetar, the tournament representedmore than operational success. It confirmed its transition from a specialist medical centre to a global leader in event medicine, capable of designing, delivering, and sustaining complex healthcare systems at the highest level of international sport. Coordination is the foundation of effective event medical care.
