Prof. Mats Brittberg
Strategic Leader of Sports Cartilage Centre
Mats Brittberg is a member of the Cartilage Research Unit at the University of Gothenburg, and an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Region Halland Orthopaedics at the Kungsbacka Hospital, Sweden. A specialist in orthopaedics since 1986, he completed his PhD thesis in 1996, and is now a Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Gothenburg. His research has been on cartilage repair with the main focus on cartilage regeneration in vitro expanded autologous chondrocytes.
He received the ICRS Genzyme Lifetime Achievement Award in Cartilage Research in 2010, and the Shetty-Kim Foundation (SKF) Scientific Award in 2012. In 2014, Mr Brittberg also received the SKF and UK Cartilage Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He has been working with ICRS since 1997, first as secretary, then progressing to Vice-President and President (2006-2008) and finally Past-President (2008-2009). As of 2013, Mr Brittberg is Editor-in-Chief for the Sage journal CARTILAGE, is also associate editor of ESSKA journal, and is on the editorial board of Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. In addition, he is involved in the Go: Life Platform for Scientific Meetings in Gothenburg, and is the strategic leader of the cartilage programme at Aspetar.
