Aspetar announces International Conference on Medicine and Science in Athletics

23/01/2019 12:00 AM

This conference will be at the Aspire Academy from the 3rd to the 5th of May 2019 with a faculty of local and international experts. The target audience is licenced healthcare practitioners (Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Nutritionists, and Podiatrists) and sport scientists, researchers and coaches.

Commenting on the announcement, Dr Paul Dijkstra, Director of Medical Education at Aspetar and Chairperson of the Scientific Planning Committee, said:

This conference will be the first of its kind in Qatar and we expect up to 500 delegates involved in athletics (Track and Field) to attend. The timing couldn’t be better as Doha is preparing to host the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in September - October; the conference will further coincide with the 2019 IAAF Doha Diamond League event.

The conference will cover the latest evidence on topics relevant to athletes and their science and medical support teams, including: training and performing in the heat, how to prevent and deal with common injuries and illnesses, managing in-season tendon pain, hamstring strains, and bone stress injuries.

The sport science sessions will include lectures and interactive discussions on performance optimisation, nutrition and how to support and prepare athletes to travel and compete. Besides the scheduled sessions, participants will have the opportunity to choose from 16 different practical symposia and clinical anatomy sessions at the Aspetar Sports Surgery Training Center.

The conference offers a unique opportunity to combine athletics-focused professional development using a world-class faculty of clinicians and scientists with seeing elite athletes in action during the 2019 IAAF Doha Diamond League. The faculty include Jan Ekstrand, Roald Bahr, Jill Cook, Karim Khan, Clare Ardern, Andrea Mosler, Juan-Manuel Alonso, Trent Stellingwerff, Andrew Jones, Douglas Casa, Rod Whiteley, Kieran O’Sullivan, Marco Cardinale and many more.

Aspetar is well-known for its excellence in the delivery of clinical-, research- and education sports medicine services, supporting local and international athletes to perform on the world stage.
