Aspetar inaugurates new expansion that features specialised services and equipped with the latest in sports medicine

During the inauguration ceremony, Al-Suwaidi said:

We are proud of this new achievement for Aspetar. Last year we inaugurated the north expansion of the hospital and today we witness the opening of the west expansion as part of the overall strategy of the Aspire Zone Foundation to expand it facilities and services and its vision to become the reference in sports excellence, as well as Aspetar’s strategic goals

Meanwhile, Dr Al-Kuwari said

The west expansion is a continuation of the ongoing modernization and development undertaken by Aspetar to stay in-line with the latest development in sports medicine. This expansion will increase the capacity of the hospital’s rehabilitation and physiotherapy services, the services offered by its exercise medicine and physiology clinics, as well as improve the performance of athletes

The inauguration ceremony included a tour of the services of the new building with its state-of-the-art equipment that provide the highest levels of treatment and rehabilitation services. The guests also visited the orthopaedic surgery-training centre, which identifies the latest techniques in athletic treatment methodology, and toured the research and development department

The total area of the expansion is 10,080 sqm2 and includes the following facilities and services:

The basement level includes a Sports Surgery Training Centre for surgical training and education, which is the Middle East’s first surgical and anatomical training centre specialized in sports surgery. It is also a leading sports surgical training and education centre for surgeons available locally, regionally and globally with a specified real time surgical training programme, which provides a stimulating philosophy develop knowledge and skills related to clinically relevant anatomy in the advancement of clinical practice

The ground floor of the new expansion houses a Female rehabilitation centre, with a capacity of 50 patients per day currently, with plans to increase this to 70 patients per day by the end of 2016.

The first floor includes a male rehabilitation centre, with a capacity of 75 patients per day currently with plans to increase to 140 patients per day by the end of 2016. By the end of 2017, the centre’s full capacity will be increased to 300 patients a day.

Both centres contain a broad range of exercise equipment for recovery from all types of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries suffered by recreational athletes and other active people.

The second floor of the west expansion includes the “Exercise is Medicine” clinics, in addition to the research department, which includes the Biochemistry Laboratory, Exercise Physiology Laboratoryand Altitude Chamber, which is capable of 9000m of altitude, while the third floor is dedicated to administrative offices.

The hospital’s West Expansion, which follows the North Expansion in 2015, is in continuation of Aspetar’s constant strides in development and progress, and its efforts to stay up-to-date with the latest in sports medicine and scientific research. The expansion will be staffed by highly skilled and trained sports medicine experts who will be delivering state-of-the-art evidence based assessment and treatment to meet the individual needs of each patient. This continued development contributes towards the hospital’s vision to be a global leader in sports medicine and exercise science by 2020.
