Aspetar organises first GCC-wide sports medicine conference

The first-of-its-kind conference aims to strengthen ties between GCC sports medicine providers and facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge and practical theory between Gulf experts and specialists and their international counterparts, in addition to helping them keep up-to-date with the latest developments in sports medicine regionally and internationally. 

Participating in the conference is a group of experts and researchers from the GCC and around the world, who will present various lectures and workshops related to the health of athletes.

The lectures will cover a wide number of topics, including the management of groin pain injuries, preventing sudden cardiac death, imaging in sports medicine, the prevention of sports injuries and exhaustion. The workshops will explore nutrition for elite athletes, clinical examination of injuries and ECG interpretation.

The experts and consultants participating in the conference include: H.E. Prof. Tawfik bin Ahmad Khoja, Director General of the Executive Board of Health Ministers Council for GCC States; Dr. Saleh Al Harthi, Chairman of the Medical Committee of the Saudi Football Federation; Dr. Qasim Al-Muaidi, President of the Saudi Federation of Sports Medicine; Dr. Mohammed Al Katan, Assistant Professor in the College of Physical Education Sports Department in Kuwait University, Dr. Reema Al Hosany, Vice Chairman of the Medical Committee in the UAE Football Federation; Dr. Rami Al Murbati, Senior Physiotherapist in the Bahrain National Sports Medicine Centre; Dr. Badriya Al- Haddabi, Assistant Professor at the Oman University.

Participating experts from Aspetar include: Dr.  Mohamed Ghaith Al Kuwari, Acting Director General of Aspetar; Dr. Scott Gillogly, Chief Medical Officer of Aspetar; Prof. Roald Bahr, Head of the Aspetar Sports Injury & Illness Prevention Programme; as well as other experts and researchers from the hospital.

The conference will be conducted in both Arabic and English, giving attendees a unique opportunity to participate in specialist workshops with other faculty members and engage with world-renowned experts in sports medicine and science. Through organising conferences like the sports medicine event, Aspetar plays a key role in enriching sports medicine and science in order to help improve sports and athletic performance in GCC states. In turn, this builds on Aspetar’s mission to assist athletes in achieving their maximum performance and full potential.
